Dunscaith Castle is a ruined coastal stronghold on the Isle of Skye that changed hands between the MacAskills, Clan MacDonald of Sleat and Clan MacLeod before the MacDonalds abandoned it in the early 17th century. Its off-shore rock, walled bridge, drawbridge holes and cliff-top stairway still suggest a place built to be entered reluctantly. Local story also names it the fortress of Scáthach, the shadow warrior who trained Cú Chulainn, giving the ruins a older, sharper edge than ordinary history alone.
