Scotland's National Record of the Historic Environment records Raasay House, Raasay as Cross Base (early Medieval), Sanctuary Marker (period Unassigned). The official map says its point is accurate as follows: NGR given to the nearest 10m. The record does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.

Linked to early Christian tradition, the site may have functioned as a sanctuary or place of pilgrimage, reflecting the widespread practice of marking sacred spaces in early medieval Scotland. Little folklore survives, but such cross bases were often associated with local saints or protective rituals.
