Redcastle stands as a roofless shell on a steep Black Isle promontory, marking the site where William the Lion erected Ederdour in the twelfth century. The MacKenzies held the place until 1790, yet Rory MacKenzie burned it to the ground in 1659 during the Montrose wars. A stone bearing R.M. and 1641 still appears in the northeast wall, preserving a personal mark inside the ruined chamber.
Scotland's National Record of the Historic Environment records Redcastle as Chapel (period Unassigned). The official map says its point is accurate as follows: NGR given to the nearest 1km. The record does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.
