An Carnach is associated with Saint Carnach, a 6th-century Irish monk and missionary who is said to have been martyred in Scotland. He is traditionally linked to the founding of several churches in the west of Scotland and Ireland, and his holy wells are believed to have curative properties, particularly for eye ailments and skin conditions.
