Castletown Airfield operated from May 1940 until April 1944 as a satellite to Wick, helping defend Scapa Flow and Northern Scotland during the second World War. Heavy AA Battery C2 stood nearby with two 3 inch guns, while a salvaged 4.7 inch naval gun once sat outside station HQ before the Navy retrieved it. Today overgrown concrete and empty huts remain, the former decontamination centre filled with cow manure and the Bellman and T3 hangars long dismantled.

Scotland's National Record of the Historic Environment records Castletown Airfield as Dispersal Bay (second World War). The official map says its point is accurate as follows: NGR given to the nearest 10m. The record does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.
