Castle Spirital stood on a small island above a busy ford, possibly as a crannog before becoming a triangular stone keep. Tradition attributes its construction to Sir Hectore Maclean and its destruction to the Camerons, while the Caledonian Canal later drowned much of its surrounding works. Today only a tree-covered mound rises beside the water, preserving the shape of a fortress that vanished beneath human ambition and forgetting.

Scotland's National Record of the Historic Environment records Castle Spirital as Castle (medieval). The official map says its point is accurate as follows: NGR given to the nearest 10m. The record does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.
