No reliable account exists before the sixteenth century, yet the castle stood tall enough to demand erasure when its final stones vanished around 1820. It may have housed the hereditary bailies of Tain, giving local law a visible shape while ordinary people argued beneath its shadow. Road works near St. Duthus church have repeatedly broken through buried passages that point toward the missing castle, inviting imagination to finish what evidence withholds.

Scotland's National Record of the Historic Environment records Tain Castle as Castle (medieval). The official map says its point is accurate as follows: NGR given to the nearest 10m. The record does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.

Tain Castle was built in the late 13th or early 14th century by the powerful Keith family, who were influential in the Scottish nobility. It is remembered as an important medieval stronghold in the north-east of Scotland and is associated with historical events during the Wars of Scottish Independence.
