King David II granted the Assynt island to Torkyll M'Cloyd in 1343, yet the islet is so small that a grand castle seems unlikely. Crude stone walls still brace its edge, suggesting a temporary refuge or prison rather than a mighty fortress. Men may have been locked inside during the storms of history, waiting for mercy or death.
