Castle Varrich is a ruined watchtower on a rocky outcrop above the Kyle of Tongue, built perhaps in the 15th or 16th century during the violent clash between Mackay, Sinclair and Gordon powers. Its single vaulted room and raised entrance suggest a military sentinel rather than a home, likely lighting a fire visible from Tongue to warn of approaching ships. The absence of domestic features and the presence of defensive vaulting point to a tower designed for observation and alarm in a coast where loyalty shifted like the tide.
