George, Earl of Caithness, erected Thurso Castle in 1660 as a fine Scottish mansion, but the building vanished when a newer castle rose on the same ground around 1875. The original stone work disappeared without a trace, erased by the very expansion meant to honour it. What remains is a layered ghost, a castle that kept being rebuilt until memory and marble stopped agreeing about which walls were real.

Scotland's National Record of the Historic Environment records Thurso Castle as Castle (17th Century). The official map says its point is accurate as follows: NGR given to the nearest 10m. The record does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.

Thurso Castle was built in the 17th century and is associated with the Sinclair family, who were prominent in the Caithness area. It is remembered as a historic stronghold reflecting the region's feudal past and the influence of powerful Scottish clans.
