What is recorded here

Redcastle stands on the Black Isle as a roofless shell above a much older fortress, Ederdour, built by William the Lion near the end of the 12th century. Norman families, including DeBosco and Bisset, held it before the MacKenzies took it in 1570, and it burned in 1659 when Rory MacKenzie joined Montrose. The ruined walls still carry a stone marked R.M. and 1641, a small human trace inside a long sequence of conquest, fire and forgetting.

Scotland's National Record of the Historic Environment records Redcastle as Burgh (medieval). The official map says its point is accurate as follows: NGR given to the nearest 1km. The record does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.
