Castletown Airfield operated from May 1940 until April 1944 as a satellite to Wick, forming a defensive shield for Scapa Flow and Northern Scotland. Heavy anti-aircraft guns and concrete dispersal bays scattered across the Caithness landscape, while a salvaged naval cannon once guarded the headquarters before the Navy reclaimed it. Today cow manure fills the former decontamination centre and overgrown concrete marks where aircraft once thundered, leaving behind a quiet ghost of wartime urgency.
