Castle mound

Scheduled monument

What is recorded here

Castle mound in Herefordshire is a scheduled monument, though the detailed facts describe Llanthomas Castle Mound in Powys, Wales. That Welsh motte rose three metres above a twenty-four metre base after the Norman invasion of Wales in 1081. Earth from its ditch and timber from nearby woods formed a defensive shadow near Llanigon, Hay-on-Wye and the River Wye. The contrast leaves the Herefordshire site unnamed except as a protected mound, while the Welsh account preserves the shape and purpose of the building.
The National Heritage List for England records Castle mound as a scheduled monument. The saved point comes from the centre supplied by the official record. Listing does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.

The historic-place record does not grant public access. Check current conditions and ownership before entering land or a building.
