What is recorded here

On the W side of a road. A rectangular graveyard (60m E-W; 55m N-S) enclosed by a low stone wall. The ruin of the parish church of Killerry (SL021-011001-) forms part of the S boundary wall. The graveyard is under grass and contains many 19th- and 20th-century headstones and some low uninscribed grave-markers as well as several chest-tombs and several recumbent graveslabs. It is still in occasional use. In the NE quadrant are several curing stones and a straining stone (SL021-011003-). According to Wood-Martin (1892, 364), this graveyard was 'cleared and levelled' in the 19th century. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Sligo' compiled by Ursula Egan, Elizabeth Byrne, Mary Sleeman with Sheila Ronan and Connie Murphy (Dublin Stationery Office, 2005). Date of upload: 18 January 2008
