Crookston Castle stands as Glasgow's only surviving medieval ruin, rising from a twelve-century-old ring ditch where Sir Robert de Croc first raised timber and earth. The Darnley Stewarts rebuilt the fortress in stone around 1400, creating a home for the earls of Lennox that later sheltered Margaret Douglas and possibly witnessed the betrothal of Henry Stuart and Mary, Queen of Scots. Cannon fire from Mons Meg shattered its western wall in 1489, yet the castle endured repeated sieges, abandonment, and restoration before becoming the first property acquired by the National Trust for Scotland in 1931.
