Cathcart Castle rose as a five-storey tower on the rocky bank of the White Cart Water in the mid-15th century, guarding the ancestral lands of the Cathcart family before passing to the Semples. It stood tall enough to command the surrounding valley until the early nineteenth century, when changing tastes and new houses rendered the old stone obsolete. The council finally pulled the dangerous ruins down in 1980, leaving only shallow foundations and earthworks for visitors to imagine beneath the park grass.

Cathcart Castle was built in the 13th century by the de Carter family, a Norman noble lineage that established themselves in the region following the Anglo-Norman invasion. The castle is important as a historical example of early medieval military architecture and as a symbol of Norman influence in the local area.
