Crookston Castle is the only surviving medieval castle in Glasgow, standing on a hill above the Levern Water since the Darnley Stewarts rebuilt it around 1400. James IV broke its western wall with Mons Meg in 1489, and Regent Arran seized it in 1544, yet it remained the principal house of the earls of Lennox. Mary, Queen of Scots, may have been betrothed to Lord Darnley beneath its yew tree, whose wood was later carved into a model still kept in Pollok House.
