What is recorded here

Indicated is a circular earthen ringfort perched on a steep rise above the Mealagh River in County Cork. Its broken bank and shallow ditch still mark a place where people once lived, watched the water, and left the land open to memory. Young oaks have since taken the interior, softening the old edge and making the fort less like a monument and more like a living edge of the valley.

In pasture, atop rise on edge of steep precipice directly overlooking Mealagh River to N and NW. Originally circular area (diam. 32.1m E-W) enclosed by earthen bank (H 1.2m) NE->WNW, with external fosse (D 1.5m) ;possible entrance to SE (Wth 4m), with causeway. Interior planted with deciduous trees; N half eroded away. Upon inspection Myler (1998, 86) noted that 'there are many young oak trees growing in the interior of the fort'. He also notes that there are some folk stories and tales associated with the site. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork.
