What is recorded here
Esker Grave Yard stands on a prominent hillock near Levally in County Galway, overlooking bogland in three directions. Its oval drystone wall encloses rows of rectangular stone-lined graves with small uninscribed headstones, while a collapsed square foundation sits within a smaller oval enclosure at the southeast. The place preserves death and memory above the surrounding bog, inviting wonder about the people buried there and the church or chapel that once stood beside them.
On a prominent hillock close to the td. boundary, 400m NW of the village of Levally, it overlooks bogland to W, N and NE. Well-preserved graveyard (ESE-WNW 41m, NNE-SSW 18.5m), oval in plan, enclosed by a drystone wall. Access is gained via gate at E. The interior is covered by numerous rectangular stone-lined graves with small uninscribed headstones at W end, arranged in N-S running rows. In SE part of the interior are the foundations of a square building (L/Wth 4m) defined by a collapsed stone wall with a gap at W. This lies within a small oval enclosure (WNW-ESE c. 11m) delimited by the fragmentary remains of a drystone wall.
The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Galway Vol. II - North Galway'. Compiled by Olive Alcock, Kathy de hÓra and Paul Gosling (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1999).
