This blue commemorative plaque records: Felling Colliery Disaster. 25 May 1812. Near to this site, 92 men and boys were killed in a colliery explosion; they are remembered on a memorial in Heworth Churchyard. The Rev John Hodgson took up the cause of mine safety, and as a direct result of his efforts, the miners' safety lamp was developed. The Felling Colliery Disaster of 25 May 1812 resulted in the deaths of 92 men and boys due to an explosion; it prompted the Rev John Hodgson's advocacy for mine safety, which contributed to the development of the miners' safety lamp.
