Kilkenny’s tomb fragment preserves a burgess name in raised Latin letters, though the man’s life has slipped away. In St Mary’s parish church, that small limestone edge still points to the lost chest tomb and the human story erased beneath it.

A fragment (L 0.64m; Wth 0.42m), composed of fossiliferous limestone, of a 16th-century chest tomb or ledger, probably a mensa set into the E wall of the Bryan Vault (KK019-026281-) in the church (Bradley 1980, 10, no. 24). The inscription in raised relief Latin blackletter reads: BURGES’ VILLOE KILKENIE Q ... It translates as, ... burgess of the town of Kilkenny who [died]..... 16th-century chest tomb or ledger fragment, composed of fossiliferous limestone, set into the east wall of the Bryan Vaul at St Mary's parish church. It is a rare surviving example of early modern funerary architecture in Kilkenny.
