What is recorded here

Situated on a gentle SE-facing slope, close to the watershed between the peat basin in which fulachtaí fia (MA085-009007-, MA085-009006-, MA085-009005-, MA085-058----) lie and another, but smaller, peat basin below this monument, to SE. The surrounding area is marshy and drains off to SE towards this basin. The monument is over- looked by higher ground to E and W. It is situated just to NW of the angle of two field walls, one of which, meandering along a NW–SE axis, just clips the edge of the mound. Another fulacht fia (MA085-060----) lies slightly downslope, 20.3m to SSE. A low, grass-covered fulacht fia comprising two contiguous ovate mounds forming a U-shape in plan (SSW–NNE 7.5m, ESE–WNW 3.7m, H c. 0.4m max.). The open side of the U faces WNW, where there is a patch of marshy ground. There is a distinct saddle between the two mounds at ESE. Here also is a stone protruding from the sod. Very little burnt stone is visible except on the summit of SSW mound, the south-south-western edge of which is overlain by the field wall. The above description is derived from: New Survey of Clare Island. Volume 5: Archaeology. Edited by Paul Gosling, Conleth Manning and John Waddell. (Royal Irish Academy, Dublin. 2007). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated. Date of upload: 29 November 2018
