Clearwell Castle is a Gothic Revival house built from 1727 in the Forest of Dean, making it the earliest Georgian example of that style in England. Thomas Wyndham created the frontage for his first wife and later expanded the rear for his second, filling the stones with two marriages and one restless imagination. The house survived a disastrous fire and decades of neglect before becoming a recording studio where Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin laid down music in its old rooms. It is now a wedding venue, but the chambers still echo with bass, breath and the particular hunger of people who needed a castle to sound like a castle.
