Pitreavie Castle still stands in Dunfermline with a pillbox caught in its grounds, marking the estate as a military target during the twentieth century. The castle belongs to legend and memory, but the pillbox belongs to history: a small concrete chamber built to shoot at invaders who never came. One is a story people tell, the other a warning written in stone. Both still belong to the same place, and neither has finished speaking.
