What is recorded here
Dunimarle Castle stands above the Firth of Forth as an 1840s seaside castle-villa where architecture, gardens and distant views were composed as one theatrical picture. Magdalene Sharpe Erskine transformed the earlier Castlehill house into towers, terraces and a Gothic gateway, while Jasper Wallace recorded ancient pear trees and new planting beside the rising structure. The castle also became an art museum, filling its rooms with hundreds of works after her death in 1872. Its odd official label as a fish trap may preserve a forgotten maritime use hidden beneath the romantic stone.
Scotland's National Record of the Historic Environment records Dunimarle Castle as Fish Trap (period Unassigned). The official map says its point is accurate as follows: NGR given to the nearest 100m. The record does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.
Dunimarle Castle was a 16th-century tower house associated with the Marles or Marnes family in Aberdeenshire. It is remembered for its strategic position and as an example of early defensive architecture in northeast Scotland.
The historic-place record does not grant public access. Check current conditions and ownership before entering land or a building.
