Maiden Castle in Fife holds cist burial chambers and cremated remains in urns, waiting for the dead to join the earth. The stones may have marked a family line, a lost chief, or a village that stopped speaking its own name. What is certain is that people died there, were cleaned and burned or laid bare, and were kept beside the land they loved. The castle in the name is a later invention; the castle is the dead, still arranged and watching the living pass.
