Wall monument in Fethard

Inserted in the internal face of the N wall of the N transept of the Augustinian abbey (TS070-040004-), immediately S of the Dunboyne monument (TS070-040073-). This limestone monument (H 0.6m; Wth 0.82m) consists of a contoured heraldic plaque displaying a shield bearing a saltire, three ermine tails in the upper and dexter portions of the field and six in each of the other (Crotty 2012, 61). The crest is a boar passant on a very heavy wreath, resting on a closed helmet with mantling in four main masses on either side (ibid., 62). The supporters are winged lions, probably intended as griffins (ibid.). Beneath the shield is a scroll with the motto: SANNID A BOWE, a war-cry invoking victory to the FitzGerald stronghold of Shannid Castle (ibid.). Described in detail by Crotty (2012, 61-2).
