Wall monument in Fethard

Inserted in the S face of the S wall of the chancel of the Augustinian abbey (TS070-040004-) above the intersection of two round arches which connects the chancel with the former Dunboyne Chapel. This limestone plaque, within a frame, carries two heater-shaped shields divided by an elaborate foliate motif. The dexter shield bears a chief indented overlaid by a narrow bendlet charged with three scallop shells (Crotty 2012, 45). The sinister shield shows two lions passant to the sinister, the lower one of which is gardant (ibid.). Crotty suggests that the shields indicate a marriage between James, seventh Baron of Dunboyne by prescription and his wife, Mór, daughter of Donnchadh O’Brien (ibid., 46).
