Graveslab in Fethard

Lying in the floor of the centre aisle of the medieval parish church of St John the Baptist (TS070-040001-), currently Holy Trinity C of I church. A rectangular limestone slab (L 1.74m; Wth 0.68m) decorated in relief with a seven-armed cross with fleur-de-lis terminals. There is a three-barred knop at the top of the cross-shaft and the shaft rests on a pillar-base form. There is a latin inscription, in Roman script, around the border. This inscription has been transcribed by Long (1982-4, vol. 2, 210) and by Davis White (1892, 99), the latter's version is, 'Hic jacet Johanes Hackett, Burges et uxor Eleanor Sall, quae obiit, A. D. 1613'. This is translated by Knowles (1903, 157) as, 'Here lie John Hackett, Burgess, and his wife, Elicia Sall, the latter died on the 21st day of May, 1613'.
