Castle Island

Castle Island is a small island in the River Erne near Enniskillen, County Fermanagh, Ireland, where a medieval castle still stands with its water gate, keep and defensive towers. Gaelic Maguire chieftains began the castle in the fifteenth century, and later English colonists changed it into one of Northern Ireland’s finest Plantation-era fortifications. The island now holds two museums: one for Fermanagh’s local life and one for the Inniskilling regiments, whose soldiers served from the 1689 Siege of Derry through both World Wars. To walk its bridges and climb its narrow stairs is to enter a place where water, stone and memory still belong together.
