Feathallagh holds a rectangular moated enclosure thirty by thirty-five metres, its deep eastern ditch cutting into the foot of the Castlecomer hills. The earth bank still stands above a boggy plain, framing wide views across the northern, southern and western lowlands while the eastern slope blocks the sky. Whoever dug that water-filled trench chose a place where land, water and height meet, perhaps to keep out danger or mark ownership. Time has buried the answer under scrub and silence, but the shape remains clear enough to challenge anyone who assumes the countryside is empty.

In a small wood at the foot of uplands looking to W and SW above a boggy plain. To the E there is a steep slope of reclaimed grassland rising up to Castlecomer hills. Good views across lowlands to N, S and W, poor to E. A rectangular enclosure (dims. c. 30m N-S; c. 35m E-W) defined by a bank (Wth 1.5m at crest; overall Wth 6m; int. H at least 1.4m; ext. H c. 1.6m) and fosse (Wth 2m; D 1-1.4m to N, S and W; D at least 2m to E). Barry (1977, 190) describes the fosse as being a 'Wet moat 3m wide and 4.4m in depth'.
