This blue commemorative plaque records: Castle Street School built in 1873 cost £970 became Portchester Board School and in 1902 was renamed Portchester Council School. Richard Bennetts, at age 22 the first Headmaster remained in this post for over forty years. Recorded plaque organisation: Portchester Society.
Richard Bennetts served as the first headmaster of Castle Street School (later Portchester Board School and then Portchester Council School) from its opening in 1873 until his retirement, contributing significantly to education in Portchester for over four decades.
