What is recorded here

Marianne pressed her palms against the castle wall at Blackness. The stone was warm despite the winter wind, and she could hear hearts beating beneath it. She had walked past many dead places that night, but this was the first to press back.
Scotland's National Record of the Historic Environment records Blackness Castle as Inhumation (iron Age) - (early Medieval). The official map says its point is accurate as follows: NGR given to the nearest 10m. The record does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.
Blackness Castle was built by the Earls of Moray in the late 14th and early 15th centuries and later held by the Douglas family. It is important as a key example of a "black tower" castle and for its strategic role in the defense of the Firth of Forth during the Wars of Scottish Independence.

The historic-place record does not grant public access. Check current conditions and ownership before entering land or a building.
