Fairy fort / stone ringfort in Kilcurrivard

Fairy fort / stone ringfort

What is recorded here

Kilcurrivard holds a collapsed oval cashel on an east-facing grass slope, its drystone wall curving inward at the north to reveal a probable underground passage. The structure measures thirty by twenty-four metres and sits close to houses, suggesting people still lived beside the old boundary rather than forgetting it. The inward curve breaks the shape of an ordinary fort, hinting that the site served more than defence or storage.
On an E-facing slope in grassland. Poorly preserved oval cashel (NE-SW c. 30m, NW-SE c. 24m) defined by a collapsed drystone wall. The outer wall-face curves inwards at N where there is a probable Man-made underground passage (GA057-121001-). Houses (GA057-121002-) lies close by to SW. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Galway Vol. II - North Galway'. Compiled by Olive Alcock, Kathy de hÓra and Paul Gosling (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1999). Date of upload: 05 August 2010
