Fairy fort in Rahanane, County Kerry: a D-shaped earthen ringfort, 18 metres across, with two conjoined hut sites inside and a cattle gap at the south. In the 1840s the name was already recorded, said to come from Darby Hayes, who lived at the foot of the fort. The shape suggests people, not fantasy: a home, a pen, a boundary marked in soil.

In pasture, on a SE-facing slope. A raised D-shaped area (18m NE-SW) defined by an earthen bank (Wth 3.3m; int. H 0.6m; ext. H 0.65m) along the straight SW side (L 40m) and abutted by an earthen bank NNW-NE and by scarp NE-SE. There is a possible entrance at ESE and a cattle gap at S. Conjoined hut sites (KE059-008001-; KE059-008002-) occur in the interior. This rath was recorded in the 1840s as having derived its name from a man called Darby Hayes who formerly lived 'at the foot of this Fort' (OSNB, Kilcummin, no. 3, 28).
