Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Knockaunbaun (kilteskill Ed)

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Knockaunbaun holds a subcircular earthen ringfort fifty metres across on a rough Galway rise, with a narrow southern gap that may be original. The bank still stands from north-west through east to south, enclosing a space large enough for a household, a herd, or a forgotten ritual. The adjacent semicircular platform suggests the site did more than exclude; it shaped the life of whoever stood within it.
On a rise in rough pastureland. Subcircular rath (52.5m N-S; 51m E-W), in fair condition, defined by a bank from NNW through E to S and elsewhere by a low scarp. Opposing gaps are evident at N and S: that at N (Wth 4m) is modern but that at S (Wth 1.9m) may be original. A semicircular platform (diam. 25m) adjoining the monument at SE and SSW may be associated. Compiled by: Galway Archaeological Survey, UCG Date of upload: 10 January 2018
