Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Irishtown (rathconrath By.)

Situated on a gentle SW-facing slope, near the top of a prominent hillock, in good pasture. Depicted on the 1837 ed. OS 6-inch map as a sub-circular shaped tree-planted area defined by a bank with external fosse. On this map the monument forms the N boundary of a small rectangular-shaped field Annotated as a 'fort' on the 1837 OS Fair Plan map. Depicted on the revised 1913ed. OS 25-inch map as an oval shaped monument standing in a large narrow field dating from the 19th century. No surface remains visible of levelled monument. Faint cropmark of levelled site is barely visible on Digital Globe aerial photograph. Site described in 1983 as a much degraded levelled monument consisting of a roughly circular, saucer-shaped area (diam. c. 40m) defined by the remains of a very low earthen bank which is best preserved from NE-E, reduced to a scarp from SE-SW and as a low bank from SW-N.
