Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Glanerdalliv

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Glanerdalliv held a circular earthen fort large enough to exclude every unwanted creature, yet local memory claims it belonged to fairies. The fort disappeared when people levelled the ground, but the warning remains: refuse entry, seal the door and leave the chamber empty. What is forbidden there is not death, but occupancy. The field remembers the shape even when the soil no longer shows it.
This circular enclosure is marked on the 1841-42 and 1915-16 OS maps. On the earlier edition 'cave' is marked in the interior, but this does not appear on the later edition. This site has been levelled and no surface trace remains. The above description is derived from C. Toal, ‘North Kerry Archaeological Survey’. Dingle. Brandon in association with FAS Training and Employment Authority (1995), no. 349. In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.
