Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Carrigeen (orrery and Kilmore By.)

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Carrigeen holds a low earth bank and a possible ringfort beside an underground passage, all buried beneath working farmland. The fort may have marked a boundary, hidden a home, or simply resisted the plow for centuries. Its shape still touches the field, waiting for someone to notice what the soil remembers.
In tillage. Field visit (UCC) to Man-made underground passage (CO007-10802-) noted 'low levelled bank' to S. Possible ringfort (CO007-10803-) in same field c. 30m to ENE. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 4: North Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2000). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
