Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Bengour West

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Fairy fort in Bengour West sat atop a hillock east of River Bride until machinery levelled it around 1979. A man-made underground passage still lies hidden inside the destroyed ring. The loss turns a common field into a place where human hands and forgotten life disappeared together.
In tillage atop hillock, E of River Bride, levelled c. 1979. Man-made underground passage (CO095-128---) in interior. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 1: West Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1992). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
