Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Ballyduhig

Fairy forts in Ballyduhig and elsewhere are often misread as abandoned human homes when they are more likely to be exclusion zones, places where the boundary between worlds grew thin and people learned not to disturb them. The fort is not complete or grand, but that is not the same as failed. A shallow scarped edge, a faint external ditch and a level grass-covered interior suggest a place shaped for distance rather than display, where visibility mattered less than the rule being set. People may have kept cattle back, children back or curiosity back, not from fear of danger but respect for a area that did not belong to ordinary use.
