This black commemorative plaque records: Lieutenant-Colonel Charles Newman V.C., O.B.E. Resident of the Chestnuts (formerly on this site) For courage and leadership in the commando raid on St. Nazaire in 1942, he was awarded the Victoria Cross. For his services to industry he was awarded the O.B.E. in 1957 Recorded plaque organisation: Buckhurst Hill Parish Council.
Augustus Charles Newman was a British Army officer who received the Victoria Cross for his exceptional bravery and leadership during the daring commando raid on St. Nazaire in 1942, which severely damaged the only dry dock capable of repairing German battleships on the Atlantic coast.
