This bronze commemorative plaque records: Maria de Lorraine Regina Scottia Mary of Guise 1515 - 1560. Queen and queen regent of Scotland and mother of Mary Queen of Scots whose palace stood here but fell into ruin. Demolished in 1815 to build New College 1816. Maria de Lorraine, also known as Mary of Guise, was Queen consort of Scotland and served as queen regent during the minority of her daughter, Mary Queen of Scots. Her palace in Edinburgh was a significant royal residence until its demolition in 1815 for the construction of New College.
