The Battle of Stamford Bridge was fought in September 1066 between the English army led by King Harold Godwinson and the Viking forces of Harald Hardrada, King of Norway. The English won a decisive victory, halting Viking attempts to conquer England, but at great cost, as King Harold was soon killed at the Battle of Hastings.
