Leconfield Castle

Leconfield Castle was the Tudor home of the Percy family, Dukes of Northumberland, leaving behind extensive brick remains on a visible mound beside a surviving moat. John Leland described a large house enclosed by water and parkland, mostly timber but partly brick and stone, suggesting a grand residence where William Percy, Bishop of Carlisle, may have been born. The mound still rises above the bog field like a forgotten shoulder, inviting imagination about feasts, arguments and children running through gardens that no longer exist.
