What is recorded here
Whittingehame Tower is a fifteenth-century stone keep beside Whittinghame Water where Morton, Bothwell and Maitland allegedly plotted Darnley's murder beneath a yew tree. The story gives the garden a dangerous brightness, as if leaves still tremble around decisions made in shadow. Its vaulted basement, panelled hall and small stair-wing remain intact inside an L-shaped house that has belonged to the Balfour family for generations.
Scotland's National Record of the Historic Environment records Whittingehame Tower as Garden (period Unassigned), Tower House (medieval). The official map says its point is accurate as follows: NGR given to the nearest 1m. The record does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.
Whittingehame Tower, a medieval tower house in East Lothian, Scotland, was built by the de Winton family in the 14th century. It is remembered as a historic example of a fortified residence and is associated with the region's feudal past.
The historic-place record does not grant public access. Check current conditions and ownership before entering land or a building.
