Yester Castle stands broken on a triangular promontory above Gifford, its vaulted keep and fourteenth-century wall marking the place where Hugh de Gifford first raised stone before Robert the Bruce ordered it destroyed. The Hopes water still divides around the old dam, half flowing normally and half crossing the dry fosse to complete a three-sided moat that no longer holds. William Hay of Yester rode with Douglas into disaster at Homildon Hill, yet returned within a year to sign charters for his captive friend, proving that loyalty and stubbornness could survive even Hotspur’s archers.
