Dunbar Castle rose as a red stone fortress beside the harbour from about 1070 until it was ruined in 1567. Its walls wrapped a broad court, while a separate octagonal chamber stood on a sheer rock, reached only by a long masonry bridge. A dark sea cave near the towers may have held prisoners, and a narrow postern may have let rescuers enter during a siege. The castle still presents itself as a place where land, rock and water joined to resist being taken.
Scotland's National Record of the Historic Environment records Dunbar Castle as Animal Remains (period Unassigned), Unidentified Flint(s) (flint)(period Unassigned), Unidentified Pottery (period Unassigned). The official map says its point is accurate as follows: NGR given to the nearest 1m. The record does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.
Dunbar Castle, located in East Lothian, Scotland, was originally a medieval fortress built by the de Vaux family in the 12th century and later held by the Crown following the Wars of Scottish Independence. It is remembered for its strategic role in coastal defense and its connection to key historical events, including the siege of 1548 during the Rough Wooing.
The historic-place record does not grant public access. Check current conditions and ownership before entering land or a building.
