Two bowl barrows on Colaton Raleigh Common, 500m north and 780m north east of Woodbury Castle

Two earth mounds still rise on Colaton Raleigh Common, set half a kilometre north and nearly eight hundred metres north east of Woodbury Castle. They are not a decorative feature or a forgotten mistake; the state has named them a scheduled monument because they belong to the oldest layered memory of East Devon. People may have walked past them for centuries, unsure whether they were dropping food, marking a boundary or simply avoiding the trouble of asking permission. The common has kept them visible while human certainty has blurred around them.
