Colcombe Castle stood half a mile north of Colyton as a Courtenay seat, where Thomas de Courtenay, 5th Earl of Devon, faced William Bonville, 1st Baron Bonville, until the Battle of Clyst Heath in 1455. Henry Courtenay, 1st Marquess of Exeter, 2nd Earl of Devon, rebuilt it magnificently, but his execution emptied the halls and later ownership broke the manor into parts. A Tudor arch from one of its windows still braces a footbridge at Colcombe Abbey Farm, carrying footsteps across the leat like a forgotten sentence from the castle itself.
